What do the Different Colored Wires Mean?
Electrical wires are color coded to allow for uniform wiring practices from one electrician to another. The colored insulation that covers the wire is an indicator of what kind of electric change the wire is carrying.
Black wires are hot wires. These wires are used to carry the electric current from the power source to the fixture (they are connected to brass or gold colored screws). White wires are neutral wires that allow the electric current to travel from the appliance back to the power source (neutral wires are connected to the silver colored screws). Ground wires are not insulated because they do not carry an electric current. Ground connections are color coded as green. Ground wires divert the electric current to a safe place in the event of an electric short or spark.
What Kind of Light Bulb Should I Use?
There’s a lot to consider when it comes to the electrical system in the house. Even something as simple as using the wrong light bulb can have dangerous consequences. Using a bulb with a higher wattage than what the fixture is rated for can cause the bulb to overheat. The overheating bulb and socket can cause damage to the wire insulation and connections, causing electrical wires to become exposed. This increases the chances of electrical arcing which can lead to electrical fires. Repairing the damage can include replacing the socket and the wires to ensure that everything is up to code.
How to Replace an Outlet
Not only can old outlets be an eyesore, they can be a safety hazard as well. Replacing old outlets can be a quick and easy fix that can help keep you and your family safe. Before doing any electric work, refer to your local building codes to ensure that all applicable laws are being followed.
To replace an outlet, turn off the power supply at the fuse box. Once the power is shut off from the outlet, remove the cover plate and unscrew the outlet from the gang box. Gently remove the outlet and loosen the screws that hold the wires in place. Replace the old outlet with a new outlet that is rated for the correct amperage. Gently tighten the screws around the small curved portion of exposed wires, being careful to correctly connect the hot, neutral, and ground wires to their corresponding screws. Fold the excess wires back in the gang box and connect the outlet to the box. Replace the cover plate and turn the power back on.
While replacing an outlet can be a simple task, it is always important to consult the help of professionals whenever anything doesn’t look right or is confusing. When it comes to electrical work, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
